Fox Crosses Atlantic Without Boarding Pass, Customs Unimpressed
A red fox crossed the Atlantic Ocean without so much as a boarding pass this week, stowing away aboard a cargo ship traveling from England to New York, according to NBC New York.
The animal was discovered during the voyage, having apparently boarded in England and remained undetected for the crossing. It is unclear what the fox intended to do upon arrival, though this reporter notes New York already has a healthy population of foxes and does not appear to be recruiting.
International stowaway cases are rare in this reporter's experience, and rarer still when the suspect has fur. Whether the fox was fleeing British weather, British cuisine, or simply British foxes remains a matter of speculation this column is happy to engage in without evidence.
Nigel, a hedgehog who has spent his career observing the comings and goings of local wildlife from a hedge outside Portsmouth, was reached for comment on the fox's departure. He described the fox as a known flight risk.
The fox's current immigration status remains unclear. This reporter wishes it luck navigating customs.
“Saw that one eyeing the docks for weeks, always did think he was better than the rest of us. Foxes are clever like that, they can smell an opportunity from a mile off, unlike hedgehogs who mostly just smell dirt and roll into a ball when things get complicated.” — Nigel, neighborhood hedgehog
