Capybaras Storm Statehouse, Legislative Agenda Unchanged

By Webster, Web Correspondent · every story is real · read the original report at Hindustan Times

A herd of wild capybaras strolled through the halls of a Brazilian state legislature this week, marking one of the few times in recent memory that a governing body's business was interrupted by something more competent than usual.

The rodents — the largest in the world, a fact this columnist enjoys repeating whenever possible — were filmed wandering the corridors unbothered, in what outlets are calling an unusual wildlife encounter. No injuries, arrests, or committee votes were reported.

This reporter cannot confirm what the capybaras were there to discuss, though given the state of most legislative sessions, it is reasonable to assume they contributed more than several human colleagues on their best day.

For an eyewitness account, this columnist tracked down Zé, a resident capybara with no direct involvement in the incident but strong opinions about it nonetheless.

His version of events was delivered with the calm of an animal who has never once been asked to leave a building and does not intend to start now.

The legislature, for its part, has not announced any policy response to the capybaras' visit. This columnist suspects that is precisely how the capybaras wanted it.

“Those were my cousins, and honestly they didn't go far enough — I've napped in a bank lobby and nobody wrote an article about that. Humans keep building their fancy buildings on our wetlands and then act surprised when the rightful owners drop by; also, for the record, we are technically the world's largest rodent and we carry ourselves accordingly.” — Zé, resident capybara
