Best-Dressed Protest in Rio Carnival History
Dogs took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro this week not to chase anything, but to march — part of a Carnival parade organized by owners using the city's biggest party of the year as a platform against animal cruelty.
Per reports, the dogs were dressed for the occasion, joining the broader Carnival procession as their owners used the visibility of the event to press their message. The parade proceeded, this reporter is told, without incident, which by Carnival standards is itself newsworthy.
Webster will note that combining a protest march with a costume parade is an efficient use of a Tuesday, and that no species has ever lodged a formal grievance while wearing sequins with quite as much dignity as a dog that has fully accepted its outfit.
Local color came from Fernanda, a sloth who observed the festivities from a nearby tree and offered her assessment of the pageantry from a position of considerable patience.
The dogs, this desk understands, returned home afterward to nap, their point made and their sequins, presumably, still on.
“I watched the whole parade from my branch, and I'll be honest, the dogs had better costumes than most of the humans. Take it from me — moving slow through a crowd is the safest way to make a statement.” — Fernanda, neighborhood sloth
