Something in the Water, Something in the Eye
Scientists have identified a virus originating in marine animals that is now causing unusual eye problems in humans, which is either a fascinating discovery or the plot of a movie this columnist refuses to watch alone.
According to reporting, researchers traced the eye condition back to marine wildlife as the source, marking a notable and previously undocumented crossover between ocean fauna and human ophthalmology. Further study is, as always in these matters, ongoing.
Webster will refrain from speculating on mechanism beyond what has been reported, but will note that the ocean has once again proven it does not need teeth to ruin someone's week — sometimes a virus is plenty.
To get a sense of how the waters themselves are holding up, this desk checked in with Sheldon, a harbor seal with decades of unbothered ocean residency and, notably, perfect vision. His perspective as a longtime aquatic local carries some weight here.
Beachgoers are advised to take the usual precautions, and Webster, for one, will be squinting suspiciously at every tide pool from now on.
“Been swimming these waters my whole life and never got so much as a squint. Humans go in the ocean for a weekend and come out looking like they lost a staring contest — maybe try goggles.” — Sheldon, harbor seal
