Senior Citizen Elephant Takes an Unscheduled Field Trip

A 52-year-old elephant briefly left the confines of its zoo enclosure this week before returning safely, proving once again that retirement age is apparently no barrier to a good escape.

Officials confirmed the animal got loose from its enclosure and was safely recovered, with no injuries reported. Details on the method of egress were not made public, though this columnist suspects the truth is somewhere between 'gap in the fence' and 'simply walked through it.'

Webster notes that an elephant of that age and tenure has presumably seen every inch of its enclosure many times over, and if it decided the grass was worth checking on the other side, who among us can really argue with the itinerary.

For the ground-level view, this desk reached out to Big Darlene, a raccoon with extensive personal experience getting into places she was not, strictly speaking, invited. Her take on the elephant's technique comes from a place of professional respect.

The elephant is reportedly back home and accounted for, no worse for the outing, and this columnist assumes considerably more well-traveled than before.

“Fifty-two years old and still finds a way out — that elephant is basically my role model. Humans always leave one gate unlatched if you're patient enough to wait for it.” — Big Darlene, local raccoon
