Breaking: Local Wildlife Center Hosts Unsanctioned Youth Wrestling League
A wildlife rehabilitation center's security camera has captured footage of what this columnist can only classify as an unsanctioned youth wrestling event, starring several baby raccoons with no apparent regard for weight class or referee oversight.
According to Popular Science, the footage shows the young raccoons engaged in energetic tumbling and grappling, the kind of behavior wildlife experts generally file under 'normal juvenile play' but which this reporter files under 'evidence.' No formal scoring system was in place, though this columnist would have deducted points for the total absence of a ring announcer.
Wildlife rehabilitators note that this sort of rough-and-tumble play helps young raccoons develop coordination and social skills ahead of their eventual release. This reporter finds that explanation perfectly reasonable and also somewhat beside the point, because the footage is, above all else, extremely funny.
For an eyewitness account from someone with decades of experience being underestimated by predators, this reporter tracked down Miss Ethel, a roadside opossum with strong feelings about combat sports and stronger feelings about being taken seriously. Her critique of the raccoons' technique was more detailed than expected.
The wildlife center has not announced plans for a rematch, though this columnist suspects one is already in progress somewhere in that enclosure as we speak.
“I've watched those raccoon babies practice their moves through the fence and let me tell you, none of them have my signature play-dead finisher. Works every time, humans, dogs, doesn't matter, they all just stand there confused.” — Miss Ethel, roadside opossum
