Seattle Raccoon Achieves Fame the Old-Fashioned Way: Looking Weird
A raccoon with an appearance strange enough to earn the tabloid label 'mutant' has been spotted wandering the streets of Seattle, and the internet has responded the only way it knows how: by making the animal famous.
According to Metro.co.uk, footage of the unusually marked raccoon circulating online has racked up attention from viewers eager to diagnose its condition from the safety of their phones. City wildlife officials have not issued any statement suggesting the animal poses a danger, mutant branding notwithstanding.
Webster would like to note, for the record, that 'mutant' is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that headline. Raccoons already look like they've been in a bar fight with a facepaint kit; one unusual patch of fur and suddenly it's a comic book villain.
Seeking ground-level perspective, this column reached Soggy Steve, a crow who claims to have shared a dumpster with the raccoon in question on multiple occasions. His assessment of the animal's celebrity status came with the usual crow skepticism.
Until Seattle Animal Control weighs in with something more official than 'huh, weird,' the raccoon remains a local legend, doing what raccoons do best: making a mess and getting famous for it.
“That raccoon's not mutant, he's just been eating better than the rest of us since the new food truck opened on 3rd. Every city's got one raccoon who thinks he's a celebrity — mine just happens to be right this time.” — Soggy Steve, local crow
