Bear Upstages Entire Air Show Without Filing for a Vendor Booth
Organizers of Kelowna's Wings and Wheels event spent months planning vintage planes and classic cars, and a black bear spent about ninety seconds stealing the entire show.
Per Kelowna Capital News, the bear made an appearance at the third annual event, drawing more attention than the aircraft on display. No injuries were reported, and the animal reportedly went about its business with the mild curiosity of an uninvited guest who wandered in for the free snacks.
Webster notes that this is not the first time a wild animal has out-performed a scheduled program without so much as an RSVP. Event insurance forms across British Columbia are reportedly adding a new line item labeled simply 'bear.'
For local color, this column consulted Gord, a beaver who claims to have watched the entire spectacle from a nearby pond. His take on the bear's motives was, characteristically, blunt.
The planes eventually took off, the cars eventually revved, and the bear eventually wandered back into the trees, having generated more free publicity than the marketing budget allowed for.
“That bear didn't care about your biplanes, he smelled somebody's barbecue three fields over and took the scenic route. Bears don't do RSVPs, they do buffets — humans ought to know that by now.” — Gord, resident beaver
