The Great Cape May Walkabout, Briefly Interrupted
A wallaby went for an unauthorized walkabout outside Cape May County Zoo and has since been located and returned safely, closing out a brief but presumably eventful stretch of unsupervised marsupial freedom. No further harm was reported.
According to 6abc Philadelphia, the wallaby escaped its enclosure and was found after search efforts, with zoo officials confirming its safe recovery. The exact route of the escape, and what the wallaby did with its brief liberty, was not detailed in the report.
This columnist has covered enough enclosure breaches to know the pattern: animal leaves premises, animal enjoys unscheduled sightseeing, animal is retrieved looking mildly unbothered by the whole ordeal. Cape May appears to have followed the standard script to the letter.
For a firsthand account of the wallaby's brief tour of the Jersey Shore, we tracked down Tammy from the boardwalk, a herring gull with a reputation for being present at every unusual event within a five-mile radius. Her version of events involves rather more foot traffic than the official statement suggests.
The wallaby is back home, the zoo's fencing is presumably under review, and the boardwalk gulls have a new story to tell for weeks. Spun and done.
“I saw the whole thing from the pier and honestly the wallaby had better situational awareness than most tourists down here. Pro tip from someone who's stolen a thousand funnel cakes: if you're gonna make a run for it, do it near the fries stand, nobody chases you as hard.” — Tammy from the boardwalk, herring gull
