Foreign National Enters Country via Cargo Vessel, Skips Immigration Entirely
A red fox crossed the Atlantic Ocean without a passport, a ticket, or apparently anyone's permission, riding a cargo ship from England straight into New York Harbor.
NBC New York reports the fox was discovered as a stowaway aboard the vessel, having presumably boarded somewhere in England and simply committed to the journey. Details on how it got aboard, what it ate along the way, or whether it filed any customs declarations were not available.
This is, to Webster's knowledge, the most impressive unauthorized transatlantic crossing by a mammal since the last one, and it required considerably less paperwork than a human tourist visa.
For local reaction, this desk tracked down Tony from Queens, a city pigeon with his own extensive history of unofficial international travel via shipping container.
His account of events differs from the official record, mostly on the question of who actually has jurisdiction over the docks.
Wildlife officials have not said what will happen to the fox next, but if precedent holds, it will simply become a New Yorker. Spun and done.
“No papers, no ticket, no complaints from customs — that's my kind of tourist. Tell him the bagels are down 5th, and if a hawk asks, he was never here.” — Tony from Queens, city pigeon
