Official Inquiry Confirms What Everyone Suspected: Someone Left a Door Open

By Webster, Web Correspondent · every story is real · read the original report at Post and Courier

The city of Greenville has concluded its investigation into last week's leopard escape and returned a verdict as old as zoos themselves: human error.

According to the Post and Courier, officials confirmed the animal got loose from its exhibit due to a mistake on staff's part, prompting a tranquilization and secure recapture. The leopard was contained without further incident, and the zoo has presumably reviewed its latch procedures since.

Webster has covered enough municipal incident reports to recognize the genre immediately: no wrongdoing by the animal, full accountability deflected onto a clipboard somewhere. The leopard, notably, has not been asked to comment on staffing protocols.

For a resident's take on unsecured enclosures, this desk spoke with Deacon Willie, a raccoon with considerable firsthand expertise in exploiting exactly this kind of oversight.

His account of events differs from the official record, primarily in his belief that the leopard undersold the opportunity.

The zoo says procedures are being reviewed. Webster says procedures are always being reviewed, right up until the next unlatched door.

“Human error, they said — I've been telling folks for years that leaving doors unlatched is a personal invitation to us all. That leopard's an amateur though, I'd have been out and back with a snack before anybody noticed.” — Deacon Willie, local raccoon
