Case File: The Gear Bag That Walked Out of the Firehouse On Its Own
A black bear is the prime suspect in a brazen daylight burglary at a Colorado Springs fire station, having allegedly entered the building, selected a single gear bag, and departed without so much as an incident report.
Surveillance footage obtained by multiple outlets shows the bear walking calmly into the station, grabbing the bag, and leaving the way it came, according to fire department officials. No firefighters were injured, and the department has since reviewed door protocols following the incident.
This reporter has covered arson, embezzlement, and one particularly bitter homeowners' association dispute, but never has he seen a suspect exit a public safety building with such unearned confidence. The bear did not run. The bear did not hesitate. The bear, by all accounts, walked.
For a firsthand account, this desk reached out to Big Darlene, a local elk who grazes near the station and claims to have watched the entire operation unfold from a nearby field. Her version of events raises new questions about the bear's methods.
Fire officials have not commented on whether the gear bag has been recovered, and this reporter suspects it has not. Spun and done.
“That bag belonged to Gerald down at Station 12, and between you and me, that bear's been casing the place for weeks. Folks act surprised, but black bears remember every unlocked door they've ever seen, so maybe lock yours.” — Big Darlene, local elk
