Fake Wildlife Photos Are Causing Very Real Panic

By Webster, Web Correspondent · every story is real · read the original report at Mongabay

A wave of fabricated wildlife attack images is reportedly stoking genuine conservation alarm, according to a new report examining how doctored and AI-generated photos of animal behavior are spreading online.

The report finds that fake depictions of wildlife attacks and unusual animal behavior have circulated widely enough to influence public perception and, in some cases, conservation debates, despite not reflecting real events.

This reporter has built an entire career on verified, on-the-record animal reporting, so news that anonymous image generators are now outcompeting actual journalism for public trust is, frankly, professionally insulting. If a bear is going to go viral, this desk would at least like it to be a real bear.

Nigel, a city pigeon with considerable experience being misidentified in blurry photographs, offered his take on the credibility crisis facing wildlife media.

No word yet on whether platforms plan to label synthetic wildlife content, though this reporter suspects the real animals would appreciate the credit.

“Fake bear photos, real panic, sounds about right for the internet these days. I've been mistaken for a rat in three different tabloids and let me tell you, none of us asked for the attention.” — Nigel, city pigeon
