Local Bear Appoints Himself Referee, Deer Comply
A black bear inserted himself into a dispute well outside his jurisdiction this week, interrupting a fight between two mule deer in Sequoia National Park, footage shows.
The video, captured by park visitors, shows the bear approaching the sparring deer and effectively ending hostilities through sheer presence, according to the report from Outdoors with Bear Grylls.
This reporter has covered wildlife conflict mediation before, though rarely with such a clean resolution. There is no indication the bear filed paperwork, sought compensation, or was in any way authorized to intervene, which by park standards makes him roughly as qualified as most human committee members.
For an eyewitness account, this reporter consulted Chester, a local marmot who observed the altercation from a safe boulder. His read on the bear's motives differs considerably from the tourists' version of events.
Whether the deer settled their dispute afterward remains unclear. The bear, notably, did not stick around for follow-up questions.
“Bears breaking up fights? Sure, big guy shows up, everybody stops swinging — that's just physics. Meanwhile I've been mediating squirrel arguments over pinecones for years and nobody's ever put me on television.” — Chester, local marmot
