Elephant, 52, Briefly Reclaims Her Freedom

By Webster, Web Correspondent · every story is real · read the original report at ABC News

A 52-year-old elephant proved that seniority has its privileges this week, briefly escaping her zoo enclosure before being returned safely, according to ABC News.

Details on the exact method of escape were not fully specified in early reporting, though zoo officials confirmed the animal was recovered without incident and appears unharmed.

This reporter has covered enough zoo containment failures this year to warrant a rotating desk for it, and can report that most involve doors humans forgot to lock rather than any particular cunning on the animal's part. An elephant of that seniority has presumably seen every enclosure design there is.

For ground-level perspective, this reporter tracked down Coach Dobbins, a local raccoon known to work the perimeter of the zoo's dumpsters. His account of the incident differs from the official zoo statement in several key respects.

The elephant, for her part, has offered no comment, which this reporter considers the correct call. Spun and done.

“Fifty-two years old and still got the hips for a jailbreak — I respect the hustle. I've been casing that dumpster for weeks and haven't even cleared the fence, so somebody double the locks and maybe throw in a few more peanuts for morale.” — Coach Dobbins, local raccoon
