Ávila Sets Horses on a Collision Course With Fire, Calls It Tradition
In the Spanish town of San Bartolomé de Pinares, the fastest way to bless a horse, it turns out, is to ride it directly through a wall of fire, and on the feast day of St. Anthony, riders once again did exactly that.
According to the report, horses leaped through flames in the streets while elsewhere in Spain, pets were brought to church as part of animal-blessing rituals honoring St. Anthony, patron saint of animals. The Luminarias tradition has run for centuries, which this reporter notes is longer than most fire codes have existed.
Webster is obligated to point out that no injuries were reported in the material reviewed, and that 'blessing' and 'bonfire obstacle course' are apparently interchangeable concepts in Ávila province. Fire marshals were presumably present. Presumably.
This reporter reached a local source, Paco, a donkey who has lived adjacent to the festival route for years and watched proceedings from a safe distance behind a fence. His account of the evening's risk assessment differs sharply from the human organizers'.
Whatever one calls it — ritual, tradition, or extremely specific horse insurance claim waiting to happen — the horses cleared the flames and the town moved on to dinner. Some blessings just come with more smoke than others.
“I've walked through worse than that for half a carrot, hombre. Humans light the fire, we do the jumping — typical. Fun fact, a horse can smell fear a kilometer off, so somebody better make sure those flames smell like nothing.” — Paco, local donkey
