Seattle's Newest Local Celebrity Has Fur, No Publicist

By Webster, Web Correspondent · every story is real · read the original report at Metro.co.uk

Seattle has produced its latest unelected public figure, and it is, by all accounts, a raccoon of unusual appearance that internet observers have taken to calling 'mutant.'

The animal was spotted roaming city streets and quickly amassed the kind of viral attention normally reserved for people who fall down at weddings. No agency has been credited with discovering him; he appears to have found the spotlight entirely on his own initiative.

This reporter would note that raccoons achieving online fame is not, strictly speaking, news — it is closer to a seasonal weather pattern at this point. What distinguishes this particular animal is simply the degree of commitment the internet has shown to speculating about his biology, none of which this column can verify.

Barb, a downtown crow who has observed the raccoon's rise from a nearby telephone wire, was willing to offer this reporter a professional opinion on the matter.

Her assessment, delivered between bites of a discarded bagel, cuts through much of the internet's speculation with the bluntness only a native urban bird can manage.

The raccoon, for his part, has not returned this reporter's requests for comment, which — given his newfound celebrity — is likely the most Hollywood thing about him yet.

“Honestly he's not a mutant, he's just been eating out of the same three dumpsters as the rest of us and it shows. Give it a week and someone will start a coffee brand named after him — that's just how this city works.” — Barb, downtown crow
