Tahoe Bear Forgoes Doorknob, Opts for Direct Entry
A bear near Lake Tahoe was caught on video breaking directly into a cabin, bypassing whatever formalities typically precede a home invasion in favor of, apparently, just going for it.
Footage of the incident, reported by NBC Los Angeles, shows the bear making its way inside without much hesitation. No injuries have been reported, and the bear's specific motive, snack-related or otherwise, has not been officially confirmed.
Bear break-ins are a familiar seasonal hazard around the Tahoe basin, where black bears routinely investigate human structures for anything resembling food. Webster notes that this incident appears consistent with that pattern, if perhaps more direct than most.
For local perspective on cabin security in bear country, Webster consulted Cousin Ray-Ray, mountain marmot, a longtime rodent-about-town with strong opinions on proper break-in etiquette.
The cabin's owners have not indicated whether repairs are underway. Webster assumes the bear, wherever it currently is, remains entirely unconcerned with the property damage report.
“That bear didn't even check if the door was unlocked first, just went straight through it. I've been sneaking into cabins for sunflower seeds since the Clinton administration and I never once broke a window, that's just bad manners.” — Cousin Ray-Ray, mountain marmot
