Cape May's Wallaby Walkabout Ends Quietly, No Statement Issued
A wallaby that escaped from its enclosure at Cape May Zoo in New Jersey has been safely recovered, closing out what this reporter assumes was a brief but eventful chapter in the animal's personal history.
Details on the escape itself remain sparse, but 6abc Philadelphia confirms the wallaby is now back in zoo custody, apparently none the worse for its unscheduled excursion into the Jersey Shore ecosystem.
Wallabies are not native to New Jersey, a fact that presumably made the animal somewhat conspicuous during whatever amount of time it spent at large. Webster notes that this is generally how these things end: briefly alarming, then quietly resolved.
For an eyewitness account of local wildlife's reaction to the incident, Webster spoke with Big Darlene, local osprey, who had a bird's-eye view of the search efforts from her usual perch above the marsh.
The zoo has not indicated how the wallaby got out in the first place, and Webster suspects the animal itself is not offering testimony. Case closed, presumably, until the next escape.
“Honey, I circled that whole marsh looking for it before Animal Control even got their boots on. A wallaby loose on the boardwalk is nothing, I've seen tourists do worse things to a funnel cake stand.” — Big Darlene, local osprey
