Manta Rays Form Unauthorized Freight Train, Diver Files Report

By Webster, Web Correspondent · every story is real · read the original report at BBC Wildlife Magazine

A diver off the Great Barrier Reef has captured footage of something marine biologists are calling a manta ray 'chain,' and by the diver's own account, it moved past like a freight train. No timetable was published in advance.

The footage, reported by BBC Wildlife Magazine, shows the mantas moving in an unusually coordinated line, a behavior that remains something of a mystery to researchers despite decades of reef observation. The reef, it should be noted, has seen stranger things, but rarely this well choreographed.

Webster's professional opinion, offered with the caveat that he has never once been underwater on purpose, is that any animal capable of forming an orderly line deserves more credit than it currently receives. Humans have been trying to manage queues since the invention of the ticket counter and still can't get it right.

For a local perspective, this desk located Bazza, a sea turtle who has logged more hours on this stretch of reef than most tour operators. His account suggests the mantas were moving with unusual purpose, though he stopped short of speculating on where exactly they were headed.

The scientific community will presumably spend months studying the footage. Bazza has already moved on with his day.

“Mate, I've been cruising this reef for forty years and I've never seen the mantas organize like that. Looked like they were late for something, which is rare for animals with literally nowhere to be.” — Bazza, resident sea turtle
