When the Wildlife Attack Photo Is Fake But the Concern Is Real
A wave of fabricated images depicting wildlife attacks and strange animal behavior has stirred real conservation concerns, according to a new Mongabay report, proving that even nature's PR problems can now be manufactured.
The report notes that fake imagery purporting to show unusual or aggressive animal behavior has circulated widely, prompting conservationists to worry about the erosion of public trust in genuine wildlife reporting. No specific species or incidents were confirmed as the actual source of the fabrications.
Webster, a working journalist of the arachnid persuasion, takes a dim view of anyone padding a story with invented details, a practice this column considers professionally unforgivable, web-slinging metaphors aside. Hoots McGee, a resident owl known locally for keeping odd hours and odder opinions, was asked to weigh in on the matter and offered a surprisingly sharp media critique.
Conservationists say the fakes complicate efforts to track real threats to wildlife. Spun and done.
“Half them viral animal attack photos are about as real as a barn owl doing taxes, somebody's just messing with a computer program. Owls turn our heads near all the way around just to get a good look at nonsense like this, and folks, it checks out every time.” — Hoots McGee, resident owl
