Cinnamon's Second Act: From Fugitive to Guest of Honor

By Webster, Web Correspondent · every story is real · read the original report at BBC

Cinnamon the capybara, once the subject of a zoo-wide manhunt after slipping out of Hoo Zoo, has been formally welcomed back into good standing with a birthday party in her honor.

The celebration marks something of a full-circle moment for an animal whose earlier bid for freedom made headlines. The zoo's decision to commemorate the occasion rather than dwell on the breach suggests a certain institutional forgiveness rarely extended to repeat offenders.

This desk has covered enough zoo escapes to note that a cake is an unusual outcome for an animal with an escape on its record, but capybaras have long benefited from a reputation as the animal kingdom's most agreeable houseguest.

Nigel, a hedgehog who lives nearby and takes a dim view of unnecessary socializing, was asked for comment on the festivities.

Cinnamon reportedly enjoyed the party without incident, a marked improvement on her last unsupervised outing, and the zoo has not indicated any plans to test her loyalty with an unlocked gate.

Spun and done.

“Bit rich giving a party to the one who did a runner, if you ask me — round here we just curl up and mind our own business. Still, capybaras are the only rodent that gets along with literally everything, so I suppose she earned the cake.” — Nigel, hedgehog
