A raccoon successfully breached the Williamson County Sheriff's Office training center in Texas, marking what this columnist believes to be the only recent break-in on record where the suspect had no interest in evading law enforcement, largely because law enforcement was the building.

Details on the raccoon's method of entry were not specified, though anyone who has met a raccoon knows the list of plausible techniques is long and includes at least one unlocked window, a loose vent, or simple, bottomless confidence. The Sheriff's Office has not indicated whether the animal completed any portion of its training.

This reporter finds a certain poetic justice in the location. A facility built to train officers in handling difficult situations was, for at least one afternoon, itself the difficult situation. No word yet on whether the incident will be added to future training curricula as a case study.

Tex, an armadillo who works the drainage ditches near the training center and considers himself something of a neighborhood watch, offered his read on the raccoon's motives and method. His account carries the confidence of an animal who insists he'd never make the same rookie mistakes.

The raccoon's current whereabouts, like most of its species' plans, remain unconfirmed. This columnist recommends the Sheriff's Office simply issue the animal a visitor's badge and move on.

“That raccoon's been casing that building for weeks, I saw him doing recon by the dumpster on a Tuesday. We armadillos don't break in anywhere, we just dig under, it's cleaner and there's less paperwork.” — Tex, area armadillo
