The Tortoise, The Crack, and the Long Arm of Wildlife Law

By Webster, Web Correspondent · every story is real · read the original report at BroBible

A Florida woman set out to do a good deed Tuesday and instead discovered the state's tortoise bureaucracy, after spotting a gopher tortoise with a visible crack in its shell and realizing that intervening on his behalf could land her in more trouble than the tortoise is in.

According to the report, gopher tortoises are a protected species under Florida law, meaning even well-intentioned humans face restrictions on handling, moving, or otherwise 'messing with' one — cracked shell or not. The tortoise's condition and the woman's next move were not detailed beyond the discovery itself, but the legal reality was clear enough to stop her cold.

This is, Webster notes, a distinctly Floridian genre of story: concerned citizen encounters injured wildlife, concerned citizen learns the wildlife has better legal representation than she does. The gopher tortoise did not ask to become a bureaucratic case study, and yet here we are.

Seeking outside comment, this reporter tracked down Cousin Ray-Ray, a local armadillo who claims personal familiarity with the tortoise in question and offered an account that raised more questions than it answered.

Whether Ray-Ray's testimony holds up under scrutiny is, like most things in this story, not this columnist's department.

The tortoise, for what it's worth, was last reported minding his own business, protected by law, and blissfully unaware he'd become a headline.

“That's Gerald, he's been running that cracked-shell act since '09 to get free lettuce off tourists. Everybody down here knows you don't touch a gopher tortoise without a state permit — my brother-in-law moved one off his driveway and got a talking-to he still hasn't recovered from. Fun fact: one of those burrows shelters over 350 other critters, so basically Gerald owns an apartment complex and pays no rent.” — Cousin Ray-Ray, local armadillo
