A viral phenomenon sweeping Argentina has young people publicly identifying themselves as animals, which this columnist can only describe as the humans finally arriving at a conclusion the rest of us reached generations ago. Reports indicate the trend has spread widely enough to draw media coverage as a genuine cultural moment.

The specifics of how one declares an animal identity online remain outside this reporter's expertise, though sources indicate it involves social media, self-description, and presumably a great deal of enthusiasm. What began as an apparently offhand trend has become something closer to a movement among Argentine youth.

This publication tends to be skeptical of humans claiming kinship with the animal kingdom, mostly because they rarely follow through with the associated responsibilities, such as foraging for one's own dinner or napping outdoors in all weather. Still, credit where due: recognizing the appeal of animal life is, at minimum, a step in the right direction.

For local color, Webster tracked down Pancho, a capybara well known in the region for his relaxed demeanor and general indifference to human trends, who was asked whether he felt flattered by the imitation. His answer suggests the capybara community remains unbothered either way.

Whether the trend fades by next season or hardens into permanent identity, Webster notes that actual animals have never needed a hashtag to know exactly what they are. Spun and done.

“Took them long enough to catch on, I've been living my best life as a large aquatic rodent since birth and I never once had to make a video about it. Humans should try just sitting in warm water doing nothing for six hours before they claim to understand our lifestyle.” — Pancho, local capybara
