Rehearsing the Apocalypse, One Fake Zebra at a Time

A Tokyo zoo conducted a staged zebra escape drill this week, running staff through the motions of a large-animal breakout without the inconvenience of an actual zebra loose in the parking lot.
According to Arab News, the exercise was designed to test emergency response procedures, presumably involving nets, radios, and someone's very bad day, all in a controlled setting where the zebra in question was either a costume, a decoy, or a staff member with excellent commitment to the bit. The zoo framed the drill as standard preparedness rather than a response to any real incident.
This reporter finds the concept of rehearsing chaos to be sound institutional practice, the sort of thing more organizations should try before an actual emergency forces improvisation. It also compares favorably to certain other zoos this desk has covered recently, where the escape was real, the doors were unsecured, and the drill happened after the fact instead of before it.
Speaking on background near the zoo's perimeter fence, Kenji, a tanuki with extensive personal experience testing the limits of human enclosures, offered a review of the drill's realism.
His critique focused less on procedure and more on the zebra's total absence from the local ecosystem to begin with.
No actual zebras were harmed, inconvenienced, or consulted in the making of this drill. Zoo officials say the staff passed.
“A drill is very sensible, I have personally faked at least three emergencies just to see what the humans would do. Zebras don't even live here naturally, so honestly this whole exercise was already halfway to fiction.” — Kenji, resident tanuki
