Undercover in the Gift Shop

An Australian airport gift shop reported an unscheduled addition to its stuffed animal display this week: a real, live possum, apparently unwilling to pay the merchandise markup and opting instead to just live there.
Per KSAT, the possum was discovered nestled among the plush toy koalas and kangaroos typically sold to tourists as evidence they went somewhere with wildlife. Staff and travelers alike were reportedly caught off guard by the sudden realization that one of the exhibits was breathing.
This is, by this reporter's count, an unusually literal case of a wild animal blending into its environment, though the environment in question is a retail display case and not, technically, a tree. Whether the possum was drawn in by warmth, snacks, or simple curiosity about gift shop margins is not addressed in the reporting, and this reporter will not speculate further than that.
For a local perspective, Bazza, a kangaroo who has spent considerable time observing human airport behavior from a respectful distance, was asked to weigh in on the possum's choice of hideout.
His take treated the whole affair as a matter of professional pride rather than surprise.
Airport officials have not said whether the possum was relocated, adopted, or simply left to manage the till. This reporter assumes it is still there, judging the plush competition.
“Mate, that possum's not lost, that's just good market research. Ten out of ten camouflage, minus points for setting off the sensor at customs, I imagine.” — Bazza, resident kangaroo
