Bear Adds Bird Feeder to List of Things It Is Not Supposed to Eat

A bear in West Kelowna was caught on camera doing what bears reliably do when a backyard bird feeder is left within reach: treating it as an all-you-can-eat buffet with no cover charge.
Footage obtained by Castanet Kamloops shows the animal working the feeder over with the focus of a professional. No injuries or further incidents were reported.
This is, by this desk's count, an entirely predictable outcome. A bird feeder full of seed hung at bear height is less a piece of yard decor than an invitation, and the bear in question appears to have RSVP'd promptly.
For an eyewitness perspective from a resident who watches the yard nightly, I spoke with Percy the Nightwatch, an owl who keeps regular hours over the property in question. His account of the feeder's final moments is considerably more detailed than the video allows.
The homeowners have not yet indicated whether the feeder will be replaced or simply mourned. Either way, the bear left satisfied.
“I saw the whole thing from the maple tree, and that bird feeder never stood a chance. Black bears can smell seed from a mile off, so really the homeowners baited their own trap; hang it from a wire like the rest of us do.” — Percy the Nightwatch, local owl
