Somewhere in the deep sea, a creature described as a 'fish-prawn' hybrid was filmed doing the one thing marine biology apparently did not see coming: walking backwards.

According to discoverwildlife.com, footage of the animal shows it moving in reverse along the ocean floor, prompting renewed interest in a part of the world that remains, by any measure, mostly unexplored. The outlet's report does not offer an exact species classification, noting only the creature's unusual fish-prawn appearance and its backwards gait.

This reporter has long held that the deep sea operates on its own legal system, unbound by conventions the surface world takes for granted, such as walking forward. A backwards-walking fish-prawn is, frankly, a modest surprise compared to whatever else is presumably down there filing no reports at all.

For comment from someone with actual jurisdiction on the ocean floor, this desk reached Admiral Pinchworth, a deep-sea crab who has patrolled similar depths for years. His assessment of the newcomer's technique carries the weight of professional courtesy.

The scientific community has yet to settle on a name for the creature, though 'fish-prawn' is, this reporter admits, doing a lot of heavy lifting. Whatever it's called, it appears to be doing just fine moving in the one direction everyone else forgot existed.

“Backwards is a perfectly respectable direction down here — I've been doing it my whole career and nobody's ever once questioned my commitment. Humans just noticed because they finally pointed a camera at it; tip for the surface world, if it doesn't have eyes, assume it can still see you.” — Admiral Pinchworth, deep-sea crab
