El Niño's Guest List Includes Sharks, Snakes, and Several Uninvited Fish

Southern California's coastline has picked up some uninvited houseguests this season, and unlike most tourists, they didn't bother making a reservation. Per the Long Beach Post, unusual marine life — sharks, sea snakes, and a supporting cast of fish nobody can quite identify — has begun showing up along local waters, courtesy of El Niño.
The mechanism, as far as this reporter's research department (one very patient search engine) can determine, is straightforward: El Niño warms Pacific waters, and warmer water invites species that would otherwise stay in their own zip code. The report does not specify a final species count, only that the guest list is getting weirder by the week.
Webster's assessment: this is less an ecological anomaly and more a seasonal open-mic night for marine life that normally keeps to itself. Nobody sent invitations. Nobody checked IDs at the kelp line.
For an eyewitness account, this reporter tracked down Gidget, a harbor seal working the Long Beach shoreline on a normal patrol shift before the newcomers arrived. Her take on the sudden neighborhood turnover differs sharply from the tone of the official marine report.
Whether the sharks and sea snakes are passing through or setting up permanently remains, per usual, somebody else's problem to monitor. This reporter's beat ends at the tide line. Spun and done.
“Half these fish showed up looking for warmer water, same as my cousin who moved to Ensenada last winter and never came back. People act shocked every time this happens, but El Niño rolls through every few years — you'd think somebody would put it on a calendar.” — Gidget, harbor seal
