The Moose With No Answers: A Field Dressing Gone Sideways

A west coast Newfoundland hunter went into the woods looking for a 7-point bull moose and came out with a biological mystery that no amount of tagging or licensing paperwork could have prepared him for.
According to CBC, the hunter successfully harvested the animal, antlers and all, only to discover during field dressing that the moose lacked the male anatomy one would reasonably expect from something wearing seven points of antler like a crown. Officials have not yet offered a formal explanation, and this reporter, lacking both a biology degree and a moose to examine, will not attempt one.
What we can say, with the full weight of the Zoos News editorial standards behind us, is that nature occasionally declines to fill out the paperwork correctly. Intersex conditions and hormonal anomalies exist across the animal kingdom, and it would appear at least one moose on the west coast of Newfoundland was living proof of it, undetected, for however many years it walked around looking convincingly bull-shaped.
This columnist reached out to the local wetlands for comment and found Fergus, a puffin who claims to have observed the moose in question from a respectful distance for some time.
Fergus's account, delivered with the unbothered confidence of a bird who has never once been asked to identify anything by its reproductive organs, differs somewhat from the official wildlife record.
The moose, for its part, is unavailable for follow-up questions. Spun and done.
“I've seen that moose down by the cove and I always said something was off about him, walked funny, real quiet type. Nature does this sometimes, it's called being a hermaphrodite and it happens more than you'd think, so maybe put the rifle down and let the fella live his best life next time.” — Fergus, area puffin
