After Days of Sightseeing, Rensselaer County's Wandering Moose Finally Checks Out

By Webster, Web Correspondent · every story is real · read the original report at WNYT.com

After days of turning Rensselaer County into its own personal walking tour, a wayward moose has been captured in Troy, New York, closing out what locals are already calling the region's biggest pedestrian event of the season.

Per WNYT, the moose had been roaming the area for several days before authorities located and captured it in Troy. No further detail on the capture method had been released at press time.

Moose do not, as a rule, consult municipal maps, yet this one apparently toured the county with the thoroughness of a house-hunter with very specific antler-clearance requirements. This desk has tracked enough loose livestock and wildlife this year to say with confidence: nobody ever plans these itineraries, they just happen.

For a local perspective, this reporter tracked down CHOMPERS, a beaver who works the banks of the nearby Hudson and has, by his own account, never once needed a search party to find his way anywhere. His read on the moose's route differs sharply from the official record.

The moose, for the record, declined all interview requests, having accomplished exactly what it set out to do this week: everything. Spun and done.

“That moose walked further than my whole family's dam-building route, and we built the dam. Somebody probably left a gate open near the highway again, that's usually how it starts. Moose can swim for miles without tiring, so frankly it could've just paddled home days ago instead of showing off.” — Chompers, Rensselaer County beaver
