Local Fossil Turns Out to Have Two More Wings Than Anyone Budgeted For
Paleontologists in China have unearthed a bizarre four-winged dinosaur, proving once again that evolution occasionally skips the elegant phase entirely and goes straight for the 'why.'
Per BBC Wildlife Magazine, researchers described the newly discovered specimen as sporting four wings, a detail that sets it apart from the two-winged dinosaurs-turned-birds most readers grew up with.
This publication does not pretend to understand feathered dinosaur taxonomy, but it will note that a four-winged animal raises real questions about how, exactly, it landed, and whether it ever really stuck it. Nature, it seems, spent several million years workshopping the concept of flight before settling on the two-wing model most of us use today.
For local color, this reporter reached MADAME BAO, a giant panda who has lived her entire life within a short bamboo grove of where the fossil was reportedly found. Her assessment of the discovery differs, as expected, from the official paleontological record.
The fossil itself declined comment on its flight technique, on account of being several million years deceased, but this reporter suspects it would have insisted it stuck the landing every single time.
“Four wings, sure, everybody's shocked. My many-generations-back grandmother saw stranger things fall out of the canopy after a typhoon. Frankly if you're going to evolve, evolve with a spare set, humans don't even manage one working set of common sense.” — Madame Bao, Liaoning giant panda
