Cliff-Dweller Gone Coastal: The Serow Files
A serow — a notoriously shy, goat-faced creature built for near-vertical forest cliffs — was spotted strolling a public beach in Prachuap, Thailand, this week, in what this desk is officially classifying as a jurisdictional error of the highest order.
According to the Bangkok Post, the animal's appearance drew crowds and confusion in roughly equal measure, as serows are rarely seen at all, let alone at sea level, let alone near beach umbrellas. Wildlife officials have not yet offered a theory on the detour, and this reporter does not blame them.
Serows are solitary, elusive, and built like a cross between a goat and a long weekend gone wrong — they do not, as a professional rule, do sand. Whatever drove this one down from the hills remains, as of this filing, an open case.
This reporter tracked down Nok, a local crab-eating macaque who claims front-row seats to the incident. Their account of events differs substantially from the official record.
Thai wildlife authorities are reportedly monitoring the area for further appearances, which this column considers a reasonable, if belated, response. Spun and done.
“That serow's been eyeing the vacation rentals for months, I've personally seen him pricing out beach huts near the pier. Everybody panics when a mountain animal touches sand, but nobody panics when a human tracks sand into our trees — that's called balance, people.” — Nok, beach-dwelling macaque
