Marsupial Fugitive Makes a Break for the Open Plains of Kansas
A kangaroo at the Saline County Fairgrounds petting zoo apparently decided the price of admission wasn't worth the view from inside a pen, clearing its enclosure and spending a full day evading capture before being returned to custody, according to KMBC.
Details remain scarce on the exact method of escape, but the outlet confirms the animal was loose for roughly a day before officials managed to corner and recapture it. No injuries to the kangaroo, staff, or fairground livestock were reported.
This reporter notes that petting zoos exist on the premise that the animals stay put long enough to be petted, a premise this particular kangaroo treated as more of a suggestion. Central Kansas is not, strictly speaking, kangaroo habitat, a fact the animal seemed determined to test personally.
Local coverage reached Dottie, a coyote who claims to have tracked the marsupial's movements through several wheat fields before any official search party mobilized. Her account of events differs from the official record.
Fairgrounds officials have not said whether the kangaroo will remain in petting-zoo rotation or be quietly reassigned to an exhibit with higher fencing. Either way, Saline County briefly had a faster news cycle than its traffic reports.
Spun and done.
“Oh I seen that roo three times before anybody called the sheriff, he was cutting through the Hendersons' wheat like he owned county plates. Kangaroos can clear six feet standing still, which is more than I can say for county fencing budgets.” — Dottie, local coyote
