Local Bear Discovers Library Has No Overdue Fines on Honey
A bear was photographed inside a Central California library this week enjoying a jar of honey, in what library staff are presumably filing under 'unanticipated patron.'
Surveillance footage shows the animal making itself comfortable with the honey jar, a scene this reporter can only describe as the most peaceful theft ever committed on library property. No books were harmed, overdue notices were not an issue, and the bear, to its credit, did not attempt to whisper.
Libraries exist to serve the public, and this reporter supposes a bear technically qualifies, if you squint at the bylaws hard enough. Whether honey counts as reference material or recreational reading remains a question for the branch manager.
Reached near the parking lot shrubbery, Lil Pinecone, a ground squirrel who claims to monitor library foot traffic from a storm drain, gave this reporter her read on the incident. Her account of the bear's demeanor inside the building differs sharply from the calm captured on camera.
Library officials have not said whether the honey jar will be reshelved or simply written off as a loss. This reporter assumes the latter.
“That bear didn't even check the expiration date, which honestly tracks for him. I personally stash three acorns behind the returns bin for emergencies and nobody's ever called that breaking and entering.” — Lil Pinecone, ground squirrel
