Bear Found Loitering on Porch, Declines to Ring Doorbell
A Coventry homeowner's security camera recorded a bear lounging on her front steps this week, in footage this desk considers a model of calm, uninvited confidence.
The animal appears entirely unbothered by its surroundings, treating the front steps less like a trespassing location and more like a reserved seat. No damage or further intrusion has been reported, which puts this incident well ahead of most home invasions on file.
This reporter notes that a porch is, structurally speaking, an invitation-adjacent space, and the bear seems to have interpreted it as such. Homeowners in bear country are advised that doorbell cameras capture excellent footage but do very little in the way of actual deterrence.
Approached near a nearby hedge for comment, Nadine, a raccoon with long-standing opinions about who belongs on whose porch, gave this reporter her take on the encounter. Her account of the bear's attitude differs somewhat from the mellow tone suggested by the video.
The homeowner has not indicated whether the steps remain in regular use. This reporter would check the cushions before sitting down.
“He was on those steps for a good while, which tells me he knew the family wasn't home. I've sat on that same porch myself waiting for the trash to go out, and I'll say this: that homeowner needs a better doormat situation.” — Nadine, local raccoon
