Two pelicans at the Pittsburgh Zoo executed what this reporter is officially classifying as a Level One Habitat Breach this week, proving once again that if you give a bird a gap in the perimeter, it will absolutely test it.

According to reports from WTAE and WPXI, the pair slipped free of their enclosure, prompting the zoo's animal care team to mount a recovery operation. Both birds were located, caught, and returned to their habitat without injury, officials confirmed.

The zoo has not released specifics on the mechanism of the escape, and sources near the fish bucket declined to comment on the record. This reporter notes that in forty years of covering enclosure incidents, the explanation is rarely more exciting than 'a latch failed,' and sees no reason to expect otherwise here.

For a ground-level account of the incident, this reporter located Gilbert, a Pittsburgh pigeon who frequents the zoo parking lot for dropped pretzel bits and considers himself something of an escape-culture historian. His account of events differs from the official record.

The zoo has since confirmed the habitat is secure and both pelicans are, as of press time, staying put. Spun and done.

This reporter will continue monitoring the enclosure for further developments, though frankly expects none.

“Pelicans have been casing that fence for weeks, everybody on the river knew it. I personally attempted a similar move off the Clemente Bridge in 2019 and let me tell you, their pouch holds about three gallons of water, so if one lands near your lunch, it's not being friendly.” — Gilbert, Pittsburgh pigeon
