Lake Worth Beach has a new local celebrity, and it arrived dressed for a snowstorm that will never come: an albino raccoon, caught on camera this week with its trash-can credentials fully intact.

Per the Palm Beach Post, the all-white raccoon was filmed in the area, its pink eyes and pale coat the result of a lack of pigment rather than, as online commenters apparently preferred to believe, anything supernatural.

Albinism in raccoons is uncommon but documented, which this column mentions only to disappoint anyone hoping for a ghost story. Nature, it turns out, just occasionally skips the shading step.

This reporter reached Opalee, a Lake Worth opossum with her own long and underappreciated history of dramatic self-preservation, for comment on her neighbor's sudden fame. Her perspective on who actually deserves viral attention around here was not subtle.

The raccoon, for its part, has not commented, being a raccoon. Its coat does the talking.

“Honey, I've been playing dead in that same alley for six years and nobody's ever put a camera on me. That raccoon didn't even do anything, it just showed up looking like a ghost and got famous, meanwhile I invented fainting as a defense mechanism and I get zero credit.” — Opalee, Lake Worth opossum
