Big Cat, Small Window of Freedom: Mykolaiv Tiger Cub's Day Out

In the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, a young tiger attempted the oldest trick in the zoo-escape handbook — leaving — and made it exactly as far as these things usually go, which is to say, not far at all.
According to wire reports, the tiger cub escaped its enclosure at the Mykolaiv Zoo before being captured by staff. The zoo's director later walked reporters through how the animal got loose and where it was eventually found, details this reporter trusts the original dispatch to have gotten right, because frankly none of us were there.
Zoo officials have not said whether the cub simply found an unlatched gate or executed something more elaborate, and this columnist, bound by journalistic restraint, will not speculate beyond noting that tiger cubs are, pound for pound, considerably better at escaping things than the rest of us are at building things.
This reporter reached Yevhenia, a stork who nests directly above the big-cat enclosure and watched the entire episode unfold from a safe, feathered distance. Her account of the incident differs sharply from the zoo's official statement.
The cub is reportedly back in its enclosure, presumably rethinking its options. Spun and done.
“I nest right above that exhibit, and let me tell you, that cub's been eyeing the fence since spring. Typical zoo management — fix the roof, forget the floor. For the record, tigers can clear sixteen feet in one bound, which I personally find rude.” — Yevhenia, Mykolaiv stork
