Down Under, Even the Calendar Gets Mauled
An Australian zoo has decided that Halloween, a holiday with no official standing south of the equator, is nonetheless worth celebrating early by handing its residents pumpkins and filming the results. Several animals reportedly went, in the parlance of the report, 'wild.'
Per the coverage, keepers distributed pumpkin treats as enrichment ahead of the October holiday, and video captured the animals enthusiastically shredding, rolling, and devouring the gourds well before the actual date on the human calendar. No costumes were involved, which this reporter considers the correct call.
Webster notes that 'enrichment' is the official zoo term for what is, functionally, giving bored animals a toy that is also delicious, and that this trick works on every species including, reportedly, several members of this newsroom.
This reporter reached Bazza, a Queensland kangaroo with no professional affiliation to the zoo but strong opinions on imported holidays, for comment on the pumpkin situation. His take suggests the appeal had less to do with Halloween and more to do with free food.
The zoo calls it seasonal enrichment. Webster calls it a very good day to be any animal with opposable paws and low standards. Spun and done.
“Mate, we don't even do Halloween here, we just saw a free pumpkin and went feral like any sensible animal would. Pumpkins are mostly water and sugar, so really the zookeepers just handed out fruit and called it a holiday.” — Bazza, Queensland kangaroo
