A growing number of patients across the Orlando area are reporting real improvement in their hospital stays this month, and for once the credit is going somewhere other than medicine.

Local reports describe hospital-based dog therapy programs where trained dogs and their handlers visit patients during treatment, offering comfort during what are often difficult stretches of care. One patient, interviewed for the original report, called the visiting dog simply 'a friend' — a stronger review than most hospitals get for their actual amenities.

This reporter has no formal medical training, a fact he shares with most of the dogs currently employed in this capacity, and yet the results appear to speak for themselves. No word yet on whether the dogs are unionizing, though given the workload, someone should ask.

For an outside opinion on the emotional-support economy, this reporter reached Judge Pemberton, a Florida manatee who spends most days drifting near a canal not far from one of the facilities in question. His take on who really deserves credit for patient wellness differs sharply from the official coverage.

Hospital officials have not said whether the therapy program will expand to other species, but this reporter has already drafted an application on behalf of several qualified arachnids.

“I've been providing free calm vibes to this entire canal system for decades and nobody's written a news story about me yet. Manatees keep our whole metabolism on low power just to stay relaxed, which is more wellness advice than most therapists charge two hundred dollars an hour for.” — Judge Pemberton, Florida manatee
