The RSPCA has released its annual tally of the United Kingdom's most absurd animal rescues of 2022, a civic record Webster believes deserves more respect than the quiet news day it typically receives.

According to the charity's own account, the report compiles cases it has officially classified as 'weird and wonderful,' a label doing an enormous amount of load-bearing work across what was presumably a very long year of call-outs.

There is something admirable about an organization filing this with a straight face, the same bureaucratic tone a city council might use to announce pothole repairs. Webster respects the restraint.

Reached near a compost heap for comment, Hedgie, a Yorkshire hedgehog with strong opinions on garden netting, offered a local's perspective on the charity's workload. Their account suggests the rescues are rather less rare than the press release implies.

The RSPCA's 2022 file is now closed, pending, one assumes, an equally eventful follow-up. Spun and done.

“Every hedgehog round here's got a cousin who ended up in one of those reports. We don't call it weird, we call it Tuesday. Stop leaving garden netting out and half these call-outs disappear overnight.” — Hedgie, Yorkshire hedgehog
